Man sentenced for crashing a vehicle into a bar

MARQUETTE — A Gwinn man who crashed into a bar with a vehicle and struggled with officers at the time of his arrest received his sentence Friday morning in Marquette County Circuit Court.

Kirk Bragenzer, 26, was sentenced to 12 months in jail with credit for time served on charges of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. On October 13th, 2016, Bragenzer was behind the wheel of a green Toyota when he crashed into the Happy Hour Bar in Gwinn.

A third charge of Operating While Intoxicated was dropped as part of his plea agreement. Judge Jennifer Mazzuchi will grant Bragenzer early release from jail to undergo alcohol rehabilitation at Great Lakes Recovery.

Prison sentence for teenager involved in armed robberies

MARQUETTE — An Escanaba man arrested after a string of armed robberies in Marquette and Delta Counties will spend the next few years of his life behind bars.

Tristen Snow, 18, was sentenced to 5-15 years in prison on one count of unarmed robbery. Snow was one of three people arrested last August for robbing hotels in Escanaba and Harvey and gas station customers in Beaver Grove.

Snow, who was 17-years-old at the time of this arrest, apologized to the court for his actions. Four counts of armed robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery were dropped as a result of a plea agreement.

Road Rage incident leads to arrest

DETOUR — A downstate man has been arrested on multiple felony charges stemming from a road rage incident Wednesday night in Detour.

According to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Wayne Strine, 30, of Jackson, Mich., was behind the wheel when he ran another vehicle off the road, stopped on the roadway and pointed a gun at him. The sheriff’s office and US Border Patrol found him driving on M-134 just east of M-48.

After arresting him for driving on a suspended license, police found a 45-caliber handgun, several types of prescription drugs and marijuana in his vehicle.

The handgun was not registered to Strine, who is a convicted felon. He was arraigned in Chippewa County District Court Thursday on ten charges, including a felon being in a possession of a firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Bond was set at $25,000 and investigation into the incident is ongoing.

School lock-down suspect enters plea agreement

HOUGHTON — A plea agreement has been reached in the case against an Atlantic Mine man who sent a school into lock down.

Niles Nathan Rothenberger, 30, appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court Monday for a pretrial. His case is being remanded back to the 97th District Court where Rothenberger is expected to plea to a possession of marijuana charge.

He had previously pled Not Guilty to possessing marijuana on school grounds, a high court misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison. School officials say Rothenberger was acting suspicious while at Houghton Elementary School last November.

Marijuana was found in his vehicle along with a properly stored shotgun. Rothenberger has a medical marijuana card and police do not believe he intended any harm to anyone at the school.

Police arrest teen for stealing assault rifle from family member

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP — A Forsyth Township teenager is facing three felony charges after police say he stole an assault rifle from a family member.

On Sunday, the Forsyth Township Police Department was called to the 100 block of Savage Street on a larceny complaint. An AR-15 Assault Rifle was taken from the residence.

Through video surveillance provided by the victim, the suspect was identified as a family member of the victim. Forsyth Township P.D. and troopers with the Michigan State Police located the suspect a short time later and interviewed him.

After questioning him, officers located the weapon in a bedroom on the 300 block of Dart Street. The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Marquette County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

He’s been identified as Jacob Logan Jeske, 17, of Forsyth Townshp. Jeske is charged with the following crimes:

-Receiving & concealing a firearm (10-year felony)

-Larceny of a firearm (5-year felony)

-Weapons – felony firearm (2-year felony)

His preliminary exam will take place May 24th.

Man sentenced for domestic violence

MARQUETTE– A man was sentenced for domestic abuse by a habitual offender on Tuesday.

According to U.S. Attorney’s Office, Nicholas James Sayles, 34, of Kincheloe was sentenced to 30 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment.

Sayles plead guilty to the charge of domestic abuse by a habitual offender after he struck a woman he lived with on Sault Ste. Marie Tribal land in March of last year. He struck the woman in her face and broke one of her teeth.

He had previously been convicted of Domestic Violence by a habitual offender in 2011.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police, Kinross Police, and F.B.I investigated the case.

Man sentenced for near-fatal assault on woman

MARQUETTE– A man plead guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury for beating a woman.

According to the U.S. Attorny’s Office David Kel Baldwin, 45, of Watersmeet will serve 41 months in prison and then spend three years on supervised release. Additionally he will pay a $2000 fine and a $100 special assessment.

Baldwin beat a woman with his bare hands at a residence on Lac Vieux Desert reservation lands in August of 2016. The woman likely would have died of her injuries if not quickly treated.

Both Baldwin and the victim are enrolled members of the Lac Vieux Desert Tribe.

The Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police and F.B.I investigated the case.

Trial set for marijuana suspect

Trial set for marijuana suspect

HOUGHTON — A marijuana case in Houghton could be headed to trial.

A case against a Grand Rapids man accused of selling drugs in the Houghton area is moving forward. 19–year–old Jon David Ettinger appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court for a pretrial.

His attorney requested a trial date be set with another pretrial ahead of it in hopes of working out a resolution beforehand. A list of potential witnesses was turned in by the prosecution, who said a trial would take about two days.

Ettinger is facing three counts of Delivery/Manufacture of Marijuana, felonies punishable by up to four years in prison.

He previously waived his arraignment in circuit court and a Not Guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Ettinger was arrested in February after UPSET Detectives executed two search warrants and seized marijuana packaged for distribution along with prescription medication suspected of being altered with acid.

He is currently out on bond.

Drug charges dismissed against defendant

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Prosecutor’s Office has dismissed charges against a Milwaukee man arrested last month on drug charges.

Brandon Hampton, 21,  no longer faces charges of delivery of heroin and crack cocaine. In a statement to ABC 10, Prosecutor Lisa Richards said after a careful review of the case, in her opinion, the prosecutor’s office cannot prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Hampton and two other men were arrested in Iron Mountain by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team April 3rd.

Larceny suspect arrested

ISHPEMING — A suspect entered a woman’s home and stole a clock before leaving the residence.

According to the Ishpeming Police Department, the 38-year old male suspect was arrested on one count of larceny from a building on Wednesday, May 3rd. On April 14th, the police department received a call from a female victim who reported that a suspect entered her home on the 200 block of Jasper Street.

The suspect engaged in an argument with the woman and after she threatened to call the police, the suspect left the house. On his way out of the home, the suspect stole a clock sitting on a table that did not belong to him. An investigation found that the suspect destroyed the clock after leaving the residence.

The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office issued a felony warrant for the suspect on Wednesday. Larceny from a building is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

Driver takes police on brief high-speed chase

MARQUETTE — The vehicle was driving at an excessive speed, passing in no passing zones and a northbound pickup truck had to swerve off the road.

On Wednesday around 5:30 P.M., a Forsyth Township Police Department Detective attempted to stop a vehicle that was heading south on M-553 between Marquette Mountain and County Road 480. The driver failed to stop for emergency lights and the siren of the emergency vehicle.

The vehicle then turned right onto County Road 480 and M-35, the pursuit then continued south on M-35 and into Palmer. At this time, a Sheriff’s Office Deputy and Michigan State Police Trooper joined the pursuit. The driver then stopped in his driveway, resisted arrest, and assaulted the Sheriff’s Office Deputy.

The 25-year old Richmond Township driver was alone in the vehicle and was arrested. The Sheriff’s Office Deputy was treated for lacerations at UP Health System Marquette and later released.

Charges will be sought for reckless driving, fleeing and eluding, and felonious assault on a police officer. The incident remains under investigation.

Suspects arrested on multiple charges after attempted traffic stop

MARQUETTE — Two subjects who were involved in a police pursuit have been arrested.

On Friday around 2:23 A.M., an Officer of the Marquette Police Department observed a vehicle traveling southbound on North Third Street that was aggressively swerving. After initiating a traffic stop, the suspect’s vehicle rapidly accelerated and attempted to elude the police.

The vehicle then failed to negotiate a curve on Blaker Street and crashed through a guardrail, went down an embankment, and landed in some trees. The driver was identified as Levi Latulip, 26, of Cooks who was arrested for operating while impaired, eluding a police officer 3rd degree, possession of marijuana, and resisting and obstructing police.

The passenger, Troy Gaudette, 26, of Traverse City was also arrested for possession of marijuana. Minor injuries were reported. Latulip and Gaudette are being lodged at the Marquette County Jail.

Suspect arrested for possession of burglar’s tools

IRONWOOD — A man currently residing in the City of Ironwood has been arrested on one count felony count of possession of burglar’s tools.

The Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team arrested the 28-year-old man Sunday at 1:00 a.m. in Ironwood. His arrest comes on the heels of a joint investigation in Gogebic County and Iron County, Wisconsin.

The suspect is originally from the Stevens Point, Wisconsin area. He remains lodged at the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department on 10% of a $50,000 bond.

Possession of burglar’s tools carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. His name will not be released until he’s arraigned in Gogebic County District Court.

Teenage girl in court in relation to death of Tysen Benz

MARQUETTE– The 13-year-old girl who’s being held responsible for the death of an 11-year-old boy who took his own life appeared in Marquette County Probate Court this afternoon for a hearing.

The girl, who is not publicly being identified, is being charged with several crimes, including using a computer to commit a crime in connection to the death of 11-year-old Tysen Benz.

On March 14th, Tysen attempted to take his own life after he was the target of a social media prank the girl allegedly orchestrated. He died three weeks later.

Another hearing has been scheduled for the teenage girl on May 23rd.

She cannot use any forms of social media and must be supervised when using a computer.

Vehicle B&E suspect enters guilty plea

MARQUETTE — A Marquette man arrested for breaking into multiple vehicles entered a guilty plea Monday morning.

Allan Blondeau, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of breaking and entering into a vehicle and stealing property worth more than $200 but less than $1,000. Blondeau was arrested by the Marquette Police Department April 14th after their investigation into vehicle breaking and entering complaints in the south Marquette area.

Three other B&E charges against Blondeau were dropped as a result of a plea agreement. Sentencing is scheduled for June 29th.

Burglary suspect identified

GOGEBIC COUNTY — Authorities in the Western U.P. have released the identity of the man arrested on a felony charge of possession of burglar’s tools.

Daniel Erickson, 28, of Hurley, Wisc., was arrested by GIANT in the City of Ironwood Monday morning on that charge. After his arrest, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office added two more burglar’s tools counts and one count of breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny.

He also faces two felony counts out of Iron County, Wisconsin for burglary. Authorities believe Erickson may have committed other similar crimes in Wisconsin.

He remains in jail tonight on 10% of a $200,000 bond.

Prisoner found competent to stand trial

Prisoner found competent to stand trial

NEWBERRY — A prisoner who escaped custody from a U.P. prison last August has been deemed competent to stand trial.

Alize Montague, 19, faces three different felony counts, including armed robbery and taking a hostage while being a prisoner. In the early Morning hours of August 16th, 2016, Montague scaled the fence at the Newberry Correctional Facility.

Authorities captured him about an hour and a half later. Montague is currently serving a 5-10 year prison sentence out of downstate Monroe County on five felony charges, ranging from malicious destruction of property to assault by strangulation or suffocation.

There’s no word yet on his next court date.

Marijuana charge lands man behind bars

BESSEMER — An Ironwood man arrested last October has received his sentence in Gogebic County Circuit Court.

Michael Noble, 53, received one year in jail and three years probation on one count of possession to deliver marijuana. On Halloween last year, the Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team (GIANT) arrested Noble after they found meth, marijuana, marijuana butter and U.S. Currency in a vehicle.

Travis Hussey, 44, was also arrested during that bust. Hussey received a meth charge as a result of the arrest.

A second charge of maintaining a drug house against Noble was dismissed as a result of a plea agreement.

Man pleads guilty after fleeing from police

MARQUETTE– Today one man plead guilty to driving under influence and fleeing from the police.

Brock Weaver, 22, of Negaunee plead guilty to one count of Fleeing and Eluding the Police 3rd Degree and one count of Operating with a High Blood Alcohol Content this morning.

Weaver was arrested back in March after he led a Marquette County Sheriff’s Deputy on chase that ended up with his vehicle embarking and landing in some trees. He was not injured in the chase.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 16th.

Car chase suspect enters guilty plea

CRYSTAL FALLS — An Iron River man arrested for running from police and injuring a passenger has entered a plea agreement in Iron County Trial Court.

Tyler Polich, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree fleeing and eluding. Polich was behind the wheel last June when officers tried to pull him over.

A passenger in his vehicle, Seth Stoychoff, 19, was injured when he tried exiting the vehicle during the pursuit. Sentencing is set for August 1st, 2017.
