Suspects arrested after investigation into illegal drug trafficking

DICKINSON COUNTY — Two individuals were arrested Tuesday evening following a several week long investigation into illegal drug trafficking.

The K.I.N.D Drug Enforcement Team was able to make multiple controlled buys of marijuana. Officers were able to trace the marijuana to a residence in Felch Township.

During execution of a search warrant, 37 pounds of processed marijuana and a large amount of currency was located and seized from the residence. After a search of the suspect’s car, approximately a quarter pound of marijuana was located inside of a large safe in the trunk.

The name of the homeowner is being withheld pending further investigation. One suspect arrested was Clifford Lautzenheiser, 49, of Niagra, Wisconsin. Lautzenheiser is charged with three counts of delivery/manufacture of marijuana, one count of possession with intent to deliver marijuana, three counts of maintaining a drug house and habitual offender fourth offense notice.

The other suspect arrested is Lee Edward Blomquist, 46, of Felch who is charged with one count of delivery/manufacture of marijuana, one count of maintaining a drug house, and habitual offender fourth offense notice.

Blomquist and Lautzenheiser are set for probable cause conferences on April 18th. Bond has been set at $75,000 for each defendant. The K.I.N.D Team was assisted on the scene by C.I.R.T. and Beacon Ambulance.

The case is still under review by the Dickinson County Prosecutor’s Office and additional charges are being considered.

Police release sketch of attempted child abduction suspect

MACKINAC COUNTY — The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office has released a composite sketch of a man they believe attempted to abduct a child in Engadine last month.

The alleged incident occurred on March 27th, when a man approached a 12-year-boy for help finding his lost dog. Police are looking for a white man between 45-60 years old with black and gray hair and a scar on his face.

His vehicle is described as a black or gray 1997-2003 Dodge Durango with running boards. If you have any information about the suspect and/or his vehicle, you’re asked to contact the Michigan State Police Tip Line at 906-643-1165.

Sentencing pushed back for convicted murderer

Sentencing pushed back for convicted murderer

MENOMINEE — The sentencing of a man convicted of second-degree murder has been pushed back until next month.

Gregory Ihander, 49, was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday afternoon in Menominee County Circuit Court. Due to his lawyer’s availability, Ihander’s sentencing was pushed back until May 1st.

Ihander was convicted in February of killing Jolene Eichhorn, 43. His murder trial lasted eight days.

Eichhorn’s body was discovered in the trunk of her car at the Cedar River State Harbor in Cedarville Township on September 9th, 2015. Ihander was arrested, arraigned and charged with open murder the following day.

In Michigan, a second-degree murder conviction can carry a sentence of up to life in prison.

Suspect captured involved in nationwide manhunt

WISCONSIN — After a 9-day manhunt, fugitive Joseph Jakubowski has been captured in western Wisconsin.

According to WBAY, a tip late Thursday led officers to Jakubowski, who had been camping out on a farmer’s property in Vernon County. The fugitive was taken into custody Friday at about 6 a.m. Jakubowski had been on the run since April 4th, when he broke into Armageddon Supplies in Janesville. It’s believed he stole 18 guns from the store. The FBI had a $20,000 reward out for his arrest.

On the same day of the burglary, Jakubowski mailed a 161-page manifesto to President Donald Trump. The 32-year-old had expressed anti-government and anti-religion views. He referred to the government as a “gang of terrorists.” He also blamed government regulation for destroying his passion for being an artist.

Police looking for stolen pickup truck

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP– Police are looking for a stolen pickup truck and are asking for the community for help.

According to their Facebook page, the Forsyth Township Police Department is looking for a stolen 1997 Silver Chevy Truck. The truck has a flat bed with a chrome toolbox and a Marine sticker in the window.

The license plate number is DLE 6828. Anyone who has scene this truck is urged to call 911.

Manager of local organization arraigned on charges

MARQUETTE–A Marquette man arrested for embezzlement was arraigned Monday morning, in Marquette County District Court.

Twenty-eight year-old Brice Burge was arraigned on a two-count felony warrant.

Burge could serve up to 20 years in prison and $15,000 in fines on a count of embezzlement from a non-profit or charitable organization and stealing. He could also receive up to four years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines for retaining a financial transaction device without consent.

Burge is accused of these crimes in relation to his former job as general manager of the Marquette Mutineers hockey team.

Man arrested for breaking into multiple vehicles

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Police Department has arrested a man on charges all relating to breaking & entering.

Allan Lee Blondeau, 23, of Marquette, was arrested Friday by the department on a four-count warrant. Blondeau is believed to be behind a recent string of vehicle break-ins in the South Marquette area in early April.

According to police, a portion of the stolen property has been recovered. Blondeau allegedly stole cash and electronic devices from multiple vehicles.

His bond was set at $8,000. The Marquette Police Department is reminding citizens to lock their car doors and to not leave valuables in them when unattended.

The department has also received complaints of bicycles being stolen from homes and garages.

Kidnapping suspect enters guilty plea

SAULT STE. MARIE — A McMillan man arrested last summer for forcing a couple into their residence at gunpoint has entered a plea agreement in Chippewa County Circuit Court.

Michael Millette, 46, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. Charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to murder were dropped as a result of the plea agreement.

On July 23, 2016, police say Millette confronted a husband and wife at their Chippewa County home with a semi-automatic handgun. He eventually left the residence with the woman as his hostage.

Millette was arrested a short time later. The hostage was not injured.

Sentencing is set for May 30, 2017.

Man arrested following domestic dispute

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP — One man is in jail after he was arrested for allegedly causing serious injury to an animal and assaulting a woman.

Officers from the Forsyth Township Police Department say they responded to a domestic violence call earlier Thursday on Jupiter Street. After conducting an investigation, twenty-one year old Kerwin Sanchez was arrested for allegedly harming the family pet. He also assaulted a female in the process, who was trying to stop Sanchez from causing further harm.

Sanchez was lodged at the Marquette County Jail on charges of domestic assault, animal cruelty and interfering with an electronic device. The animal was treated at the Gwinn-Sawyer Veterinary Clinic.

Man arrested after injuring MSP Trooper in traffic accident

L’ANSE — A Michigan State Trooper was sent to the hospital Thursday night after his vehicle was struck by a passing motorist.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post say a trooper was parked on US-41 in L’Anse performing stationary patrol when he was struck by the motorist just after 11:30 p.m.

The trooper was treated and released at a local hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was not harmed in the accident, but was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The driver was lodged at the Baraga Count Jail. The identify of the driver is being held pending arraignment.

The L’Anse Police Department, Baraga Police Department and the Keewenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police Department assisted at the scene.

Woman sentenced on reduced meth charge

MARQUETTE — A Marquette woman arrested last year as part of a meth bust in Big Bay received was sentenced this morning.

Holly Bates, 32, received one year in jail with six months to be served upfront and 18 months probation on one count of possession of meth. The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) arrested Bates in August at the Perkins Park Campground.

Detectives found a one-pot meth lab and components used to make meth inside a pop-up camper.

“I think Ms. Bates, I’m sure you think of this from time to time and maybe perhaps when you’re in jail, but if you don’t have some intervention, I’m frankly very concerned about the future for you,” said Judge Jennifer Mazzuchi. “I think that the kind of substances you’re using detailed in this report have certainly killed people. We’ve seen it in our own community.”

Bates pleaded guilty to an amended meth charge in March as a result of a plea agreement.

Man sentenced defrauding the Social Security Administration

ESCANABA — A downstate man who pleaded guilty to welfare fraud received his sentence Monday afternoon in Delta County Circuit Court.

Michael Rhines, 36, of Williamston received 45 days in jail and two years probation on one count of attempted welfare fraud over $500. He must also pay $11,032 in restitution to the Social Security Administration.

Rhines and four others were arrested last October for defrauding the government agency.

Teenager enters plea agreement in gun case

ESCANABA — A teenager accused of discharging a firearm in a Gladstone alley and running from police pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and of reckless use of a firearm Monday morning.

Nineteen year-old Marcus Kossow of Gladstone was arrested by the Delta County Sheriff’s Office for the crime in March. Two other felony charges against him were dropped as a result of the plea agreement.

He will be sentenced in Delta County Circuit Court June 12th.

Trial scheduled for murder suspect

MARQUETTE — A trial has been scheduled for an Ishpeming man accused of murder.

Derek Blemke, 24, is accused of stabbing and killing Brandon LaFavre, 21, of Marquette on June 24, 2016. The incident occurred at 1:45 a.m. at an apartment on 2050 Wright Street in the City of Marquette.

At his preliminary exam last July, a medical report read by Marquette County Prosecutor Matt Wiese said Blemke stabbed LaFavre a total of 24 times. A five-day jury trial is set to begin September 11, 2017.

Blemke remains in jail on no bond.

Plea agreement entered in assault case

CRYSTAL FALLS — An Iron River man charged with three felony counts stemming from an incident last month has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.

Johan Harju, 35, pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly person in Iron County District Court. Two counts of felonious assault were dropped by the prosecutor’s office as a result of a plea agreement.

Harju was arrested March 18th after he tried assaulting two people with his vehicle in Iron River before leaving the scene. He was later stopped by police in Watersmeet and detained.

Sentencing is set for May 30th.

Trial date set in open murder case

Trial date set in open murder case

MARQUETTE — The case of a Gwinn man charged with open murder is headed to trial later this year.

Darrell Gutzman, 52, is accused of stabbing and killing Robin Anne Lampinen, 53, of Gwinn last December at a residence in K.I. Sawyer. Gutzman was found by authorities in Ishpeming just hours after the murder.

The trial, scheduled to last five days, is set to begin October 9th. Gutzman is currently lodged at the Marquette County Jail on no bond.

UPDATE: Suspects involved with malicious destruction of property arrested

UPDATE — Wednesday, April 26th, 2017 3:37 p.m. EDT

The suspects involved in over thirty reports of property damage across the city of Marquette, have been arrested.

According to the Marquette Police Department, Officers received a report of a suspicious vehicle with occupants possibly shooting an air rifle out of the car on Monday. Marquette Police located the suspect vehicle in North Marquette and made contact with the occupants.

After an investigation, it was discovered that three suspects were allegedly involved in shooting windows out of cars with a pneumatic gun. Seth Warren Gustafson, 19, Jay Yung Oberg, 20, and Justin Robert Zyburt, 19, all of Marquette were arrested on three-count felony warrants from the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office.

These counts include malicious destruction of property and possession of a loaded firearm in or upon a vehicle. Total bond is set at $3,500 each.

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Police Department is investigating 32 incidents of malicious destruction of property using low caliber air rifles.

According to an officer of the Marquette Police Department, on April 23rd, there was a rash of malicious destruction of property incidents reported. Thirty-two total complaints were called in that included damage done to vehicles, vehicle windows, and some isolated damage to buildings.

The damage was created using a low caliber air rifle across neighborhoods in the City of Marquette. It is believed that no specific person was targeted in these incidents. Three suspects are currently being investigated by the department, who have all been cooperative.

The Marquette Police Department was able to identify the suspects with the help of a vigilant neighbor who spotted suspicious activity. While there is no danger to the public, anyone who has noticed damage to their vehicles or property is being asked to contact the Marquette Police Department.

The incident remains under investigation.

Man receives probation in destruction of property case

MARQUETTE — A Little Lake man arrested last year on a four-count warrant was sentenced Thursday morning in Marquette County District Court.

Arthur Sharkey, 49, received 12 months probation and $600 in fines for one count of malicious destruction of property between $200 – $1,000. The Forsyth Township Police Department arrested Sharkey last October for shooting the windows out of a Gwinn repair shop using a BB gun.

Surveillance footage from the business helped police identify Sharkey. Three other charges against him were dropped as the result of a plea agreement.

Federal marijuana charge nets man prison sentence

Federal marijuana charge nets man prison sentence

MARQUETTE — A Manistique man will spend 46 months behind bars on a federal drug count.

Jason Gregurash, 37, received his sentence Wednesday in U-S District Court in Marquette. He pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to manufacture fifty or more marijuana plants last September.

Gregurash was arrested by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team in January of 2016. Police say he was in the process of delivering 15 pounds of marijuana to Wisconsin.

After his prison term, Gregurash will have a supervised release period for three years.
