Competency exam ordered for prisoner

NEWBERRY — A competency exam has been ordered for a prisoner who briefly escaped from custody last August.

Alize Montague, 19, faces three different felony counts, including armed robbery and taking a hostage while being a prisoner. In the early morning hours of August 16th, Montague scaled the fence at the Newberry Correctional Facility.

Authorities captured him 80 minutes later. Montague is currently serving a five to ten year prison sentence out of downstate Monroe County on five felony charges, ranging from malicious destruction of property to assault by strangulation or suffocation.

There’s no word yet on his next court date.

Suspect found guilty on all charges of child sexually abusive material

CHIPPEWA COUNTY — A Drummond Island man has been found guilty on all twenty counts of child abusive material and using a computer to commit a crime.

67-year old Robert Henning was arrested back in September of 2015 after a three-month long investigation by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department that found 7,000 images and videos of child sexually abusive material. Henning had a two-day jury trial that ended today with a unanimous verdict of guilty on all charges.

Detectives from the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office computer unit were key to uncovering the evidence for this case. Henning’s sentencing date has not yet been set.

U.P. residents warned about phone scam

ESCANABA — Residents in Escanaba are being warned about a phone scam making its way around the area.

Officers at Escanaba Public Safety say locals area being contacted by someone threatening utility shut-off if immediate payment is not made. The City of Escanaba actually uses mailed notices followed by a door hanger the day before the shut off commences.

If you are contacted, officers are urging that you do not give out any personal or credit card information.

Two men arrested for sexually assaulting woman

CHIPPEWA COUNTY — Two Kincheloe men are facing criminal sexual conduct charges for what police are calling a very serious incident.

Andre Hudak, 25, and Alonzo Upchurch, 19 were arraigned Monday in Chippewa County District Court on three felony charges:
-Criminal Sexual Conduct – 1st Degree
-Kidnapping, restraining victim for CSC
-Home Invasion – 1st Degree

On January 13th, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a Dafter residence to investigate a sexual assault complaint. According to police, Hudak and Upchurch broke into a home where a woman was home alone with a young child.

The two men chased the woman into a bedroom where she was sexually assaulted by Hudak while Upchurch held the door. Both men knew the victim and it is believed they knew she was home alone at the time of the alleged incident.

The two men are also habitual offenders. They will both appear in court for a preliminary exam February 6th.

Car thief receives probation sentence

ONTONAGON — A Mass City woman arrested for stealing a car last year was sentenced this afternoon in Ontonagon County Circuit Court.

Candi Finley, 38, received 144 days in jail with credit for 144 days served. She also received two years probation plus court fines and costs.

Finley was arrested in September in Lower Michigan on one count of unlawful driving away of an automobile. She pleaded no contest to stealing a 2013 Dodge Dart that was stolen from Ontonagon on August 26th.

The stolen vehicle was returned to its owner.

Two arrested after early morning traffic stop

ONTONAGON COUNTY — Two people are in trouble with the law after a drug stop early this morning turned up drugs and open alcohol.

A deputy with the Ontonagon Sheriff’s Office made the traffic stop just after 1:30 a.m. A 30-year-old Ironwood man and a 35-year-old Gile, Wisconsin woman were taken into custody for having marijuana, drug paraphernalia and open intoxicants inside the vehicle.

Both individuals were lodged at the Ontonagon County Jail and later posted bond. They’re both scheduled to appear for arraignment in Ontonagon County District Court at a later date.

Motorcycle chase suspect avoids trial by pleading guilty

HOUGHTON — A Houghton man who engaged in a vehicle pursuit with the Michigan State Police last year was supposed to have a trial Thursday. Instead, he pleaded guilty.

Rudolph Voght, 31, pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree fleeing and eluding. On May 11, 2016, Voght fled from police on his motorcycle after a trooper attempted to pull him over. He ran from police at a high rate of speed.

The chase lasted 60 miles when the defendant pulled over and gave himself up just outside of Ontonagon. Voght will be sentenced in Houghton County District Court on February 15, 2017.

Armed robbery suspect sentenced

MARQUETTE — Two men were sentenced in Marquette County Circuit Court today, one of which for committing an armed robbery.

18-year old Jordan Steinhausen of Escanaba was sentenced to 3 to ten years. Steinhausen will be given credit for the 157 previous days served in court. Steinhausen and two other males were arrested in August after a series of armed robberies were committed in Marquette and Delta Counties.

Also sentenced this morning was 31-year old Matthew Botwright of Georgia. He pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to deliver marijuana. Botwright was given 2 years probation and 1 year in jail with 237 days credit.

Botwright was arrested in April after the police conducted a traffic stop and found several drugs in the car including meth, heroin and marijuana.

GIANT arrests four in drug bust

GOGEBIC COUNTY — An investigation conducted by the Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team led to the arrest of four individuals, all charged with several felonies.

GIANT officers say they had received information regarding their main suspect in the investigation, Jeremy James Whitebird, 33, who had a lengthy criminal record with prior convictions. Officers were also made aware that the residence in which Whitebird was located, was housing various guns.

GIANT, along with the Gogebic Iron SWAT team, searched the residence and seized a large amount of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, U.S. currency, firearms and ammunition. The drugs alone were valued at $50,000.  All occupants inside the residence were arrested.

Whitebird was charged with eight counts altogether, five of which were felonies including possession with intent to deliver meth, heroin, cocaine and marijuana. Additionally, he was charged with two counts of felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Rebecca Jade Gibbons, 21, Carlos Jordan, 30, and Corey Allan Tutor, 34, were all charged with possession of methamphetamine and disorderly loitering about an illegal business.

They are being held at the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department.

The DEA, ATF and Beacon Ambulance assisted on scene.

Man arrested on multiple gun & drug charges

IRON RIVER — A 38-year-old Iron River man was arrested Friday on multiple felony charges after he allegedly brandished a firearm at a credit union parking lot.

The Iron River Police Department was dispatched to the CoVantage Credit Union at approximately 2:00 p.m. on a report of a man brandishing a handgun to another citizen. With help from the Caspian Police Department, the man was arrested on charges of felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana.

Further investigation into the incident resulted in a search warrant being executed at an Iron River residence. A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of a large amount of marijuana, hallucinogens, cocaine, suboxone, suspected methamphetamine and firearms.

The suspect is being held at the Iron County Jail. His name will be released once he’s arraigned in Iron County District Court.

Home invasion suspect receives jail sentence

MARQUETTE — A 21-year-old Marquette man received his sentence Friday morning in Marquette County Circuit Court for breaking into a Negaunee Township home last October.

Jacob Roemer received nine months in jail plus probation under the Holmes Youth Trainee Act (HYTA). He pleaded guilty to first-degree home invasion in December.

Just after 1:00 a.m. on October 29, 2016, Roemer broke into a house on Longyear Drive in Negaunee Township. When police arrived, he fled on foot into the woods.

A State Police K-9 eventually found Roemer laying on the ground unconscious. Police believe he ran into a tree and knocked himself out.

Roemer told Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Mazzuchi that he has a substance abuse problem and would like in-patient treatment. He is eligible for early release from jail if he enrolls and successfully completes a drug rehab program.

Two other charges of resisting arrest and use of a controlled substance were dropped as a result of a plea agreement.

Plea agreement reached for B&E suspect

MARQUETTE — A Norway man facing multiple counts of breaking into vehicles entered a plea agreement in both of his court cases Friday morning in Marquette County Circuit Court.

Eric Mohler, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of larceny from a motor vehicle and one count of breaking and entering a vehicle with damage. Five other charges against him were dropped as a result of the plea agreement.

Mohler admitted to breaking into two vehicles in the Marquette area last February. He stole a CD player out of one of them.

Mohler was arrested for the crimes in December by the Marquette City Police Department. Sentencing is set for March 17th.

Home invasion suspect receives sentencing

DELTA COUNTY — An Escanaba man originally charged with five felony counts, including second-degree home invasion was sentenced Monday afternoon in Delta County Circuit Court.

Harley Finnerty, 25, was sentenced to three to fifteen years in prison. He pleaded no contest to second degree home invasion. Finnerty was arrested back in June for home invasion and larceny from a motor vehicle when he was found rummaging through a vehicle.

It was later found that he broke into other vehicles in the area had been entered and property taken from them.

Teenager arrested for maintaining a drug house sentenced

DELTA COUNTY — One of the two teenagers arrested last August related to the possession of meth and manufacturing meth within five-hundred feet of a school zone, has been sentenced Tuesday in Delta County Circuit Court.

Gavin Warner, 18, was sentenced to participate in Michigan’s Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, also known as HYTA. Warner pleaded guilty to one count of possession of meth and one count of maintaining a drug house in December.

U.P. man arrested on multiple drug charges

IRON RIVER — An Iron River man is facing multiple drug charges including delivery/manufacturing of marijuana.

The Iron River Police Department arrested a 53-year old Iron River resident on Wednesday after an incident on December 23rd of 2016, where a large number of marijuana plants were seized from a home in Iron River causing an investigation to be pursued by the Iron River Police Department.

The suspect is facing charges of delivery/manufacture of marijuana, possession of marijuana 2nd or subsequent offense and habitual offender fourth offense notice. The suspect is awaiting arraignment and the incident is still under investigation. The Iron County Sheriff’s Department and the Caspian Police Department also assisted on the scene.

UPDATE: Suspect identified in drug bust

UPDATE — Friday, February 3rd, 3:00 p.m. ET

A 19-year-old Grand Rapids man has been arraigned in Houghton County District Court on various felony drug charges by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team-West.

The suspect has been identified as John Ettinger. On Thursday, detectives with UPSET-West executed two search warrants in the City of Houghton.

They seized marijuana packaged for distribution and prescription medication suspected of being altered with acid. The bust was a result of a month long investigation by UPSET-West Detectives.

Ettinger is due back in court for a preliminary exam February 17th.

On Thursday, detectives with UPSET-West executed two search warrants in the City of Houghton. They seized marijuana packaged for distribution and prescription medication suspected of being altered with acid.

The bust was a result of a month long investigation by UPSET-West Detectives. The suspect was lodged at the Houghton County Jail.

His name will not be released until he’s arraigned. UPSET-West was assisted by officers from Michigan Tech University, Houghton City Police Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, and Michigan State Police K-9 Unit.

Man arrested twice in same week on multiple drug charges

ALPENA — A downstate man is facing drug charges in not one, but two different counties after he was arrested twice in the same week.

According to our sister station WBKB, Cody Schmidt, 24, of Alpena was arrested February 1st on a cocaine charge, after a relative found him not acting normally.

Prior to that, Schmidt was arrested in downstate Bay County after police found him unconscious in his vehicle on I-75. Officers found a tray of white powder residue on his lap and a loaded pistol in the vehicle.

Schmidt is scheduled to be arraigned in Bay County Wednesday on four felony charges, including possession of narcotics.

U.P. man arrested on five counts of felony drug distribution

HOUGHTON COUNTY — A Houghton County man was arrested after an investigation found prescription pills, suspected heroin, and crystal meth in his residence.

On February 7th, detectives of the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team investigated the residence of a 24-year old Houghton County man. The suspect was arrested at his home on the sixty block of Stanton Ave. After the detectives executed a search warrant, prescription pills, suspected heroin, and crystal meth were found.

The suspect is being lodged at the Houghton County Jail on five counts of felony drugs distribution. The incident remains under investigation. UPSET was assisted on the scene by the Michigan State Police Calumet Post, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Keweenaw Bay Tribal Community K-9 unit, Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team, and Hancock City Police Department.

Second man arrested from drug bust

UPDATE– Another suspect involved in selling heroin and morphine has now been an arrested.

According to UPSET, Thursday Detectives received information on a suspect departing Hancock on an Indian Trails bus.

The 26-year-old from Houghton County was identified as the suspect under investigation. He was then arrested at the scheduled bus stop in St. Ignace, by the Michigan State Police St. Ignace Post.

The Houghton County man was arrested on five counts of felony warrant for delivery of heroin and morphine.

He has been transported to the Houghton County Jail.

No names are being released at this time.

Murder trial underway in Menominee County

Murder trial underway in Menominee County

MENOMINEE — A murder trial is underway in Menominee County.

Gregory Ihander, 49, is charged with one count of homicide – open murder in the death of Jolene Eichhorn.

Ihander was arrested by police after they found Eichhorn’s body in the trunk of her car at the Cedar River State Harbor in Cedarville Township in the early morning hours of September 9th, 2015. He has been in jail since his arrest on a $1 million bond.

According to the Menominee County Clerk’s Office, the trial is expected to last two weeks.
